India sees increase in COVID-19 cases, registers 841 new infections

India has witnessed a concerning surge in COVID-19 cases, reporting 841 new infections, marking the highest in 227 days. The latest update from the health ministry on Sunday reveals the challenges posed by a new variant and winter conditions contributing to the rise in infections.

Active infections and Fatalities

The number of active COVID-19 infections in the country has reached 4,309, with three new fatalities reported in the last 24 hours. One each from the states of Kerala, Karnataka, and Bihar. This situation is a significant change from December 5, when daily cases had dropped to double digits.

Contrast with Previous Months

Comparatively, on May 19 earlier this year, India recorded 865 new cases. The country faced its peak daily caseload during the height of the pandemic, with numbers reaching into the lakhs. Over the past four years since the pandemic’s onset in early 2020, India has seen over 4.5 crore people infected, resulting in over 5.3 lakh deaths.

Recovery and Vaccination Progress

On a positive note, the health ministry’s website indicates that over 4.4 crore people have successfully recovered from COVID-19, boasting a national recovery rate of 98.81 percent. In terms of vaccinations, India has administered a significant 220.67 crore doses of COVID vaccines, reflecting the ongoing efforts to manage the impact of the virus and prevent further escalation. The vaccination drive remains crucial in safeguarding public health.
