Puri’s Jagannath Temple banned use of tobacco-related products: Checkout new rules here

Beginning on January 1, 2024, the administration of Puri’s Jagannath Temple has declared that using tobacco-related products, such as “gutka” and “paan,” on the premises is strictly prohibited.

Ranjan Kumar Das, the chief administrator of the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), made this announcement on Wednesday. According to Das, the ban will be strictly enforced for workers at the temple, servants, and devotees.

Temple authorities will initiate campaign for awareness

The temple authorities will first raise awareness about the dangers of abstaining from tobacco products, and on January 1, 2024, offenders will face penalty.

November and December will be used to raise awareness of the need to refrain from consuming “paan” and “gutka” on temple property. The ban will become effective on January 1st. On Tuesday, he told reporters that offenders would face penalties.

In a letter to the body of servitors, it stated that “no one was obeying the rule,” despite the fact that eating such items within the temple compound carries a penalty.

Beginning January 1st, devotees must adhere to a dress code

The SJTA announced last month that, as of January 1, devotees would have to adhere to a dress code. The Jagannath temple will not admit anyone dressed as half-plants, shorts, ripped jeans, skirts, or sleeveless dresses, Das had previously stated.

Due to a large number of visitors to the temple, some devotees fainted

During a heavy rush of visitors inside the Jagannath Temple last week, ten devotees fainted. According to preliminary reports, about a dozen devotees became ill, and ten of them fainted shortly after performing ‘Mangal Aarati’ in the temple. As a group of devotees rushed inside, they collapsed. They were given initial care in the Temple before being transferred to the Puri hospital.

According to KV Singh, the superintendent of police in Puri, there was a rush in the temple but no stampede. To keep the crowd under control, 15 police personnel, or 450 officers, were sent out. Considering the influx of followers, their number will be increased.
