Indian and Japanese Army undertake joint exercise Dharma Guardian improving military capability

Indian Army and Japanese Army are carrying a joint military exercise in Rajasthan called Dharma Guardian 2024. This is the 5th edition of the yearly joint military exercise between the Indian Army and Japan Ground Self Defence Force. The exercise is being carried out in the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan. The exercise is scheduled to be  conducted between 25 February and 9th March 2024.

This exercise is conducted every year alternatively in Japan and India. A contingent of 40 soldiers take part in the exercise. The contingent of Japanese Army participating in the exercise is from the  the 34th Infantry Regiment  and the Indian troops are represented by the Battalion from the Rajputana Rifles.

 

The goal of the Exercise is to strengthen military collaboration and improve joint capabilities for executing combined operations in semi-urban settings under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. The focus will be on maintaining high physical fitness, coordinating joint plans, practicing tactical drills, and honing basic special arms skills.

Tactical drills during the Exercise will involve establishing a Temporary Operating Base, creating an Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) Grid, setting up a Mobile Vehicle Check Post, conducting Cordon and Search Operations in a challenging village, performing Heliborne operations, and practicing House Intervention Drills. Additionally, there will be a display of weapons and equipment, highlighting the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative and the growing defence industrial capability of the country.

Lieutenant General TOGASHI Yuichi, Commanding General of the Eastern Army, Japan Ground Self Defence Force, is set to visit India during “Exercise DHARMA GUARDIAN.” The General officer will witness a Combat Shooting demonstration, Special Heliborne Operation (SHBO), and House Intervention Drills at Mahajan Field Firing Ranges on March 3, 2024.

The exercise will serve as a platform for both sides to share their best practices in tactics, techniques, and procedures for conducting tactical operations. It aims to promote interoperability, camaraderie, and mutual understanding among the troops, contributing to an elevated level of defence cooperation and strengthening bilateral relations between the two friendly nations.
