India’s permanent
representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, announced on
Monday that India had donated $1 million to the UN as part of a voluntary
contribution to encourage the use of the Hindi language within the
international institution and to promote intercultural communication and
understanding.

Melissa Fleming, Under
Secretary General of the United Nations Department of Global Communications,
accepted the $1,000,000 payment from Ms Kamboj.
The Government of India
is pleased to give a sizable in-kind donation to the United Nations, with the
goal of increasing Hindi’s global profile. Kamboj tweeted that this was “a
positive step towards promoting open communication and mutual
understanding.”
She said that India and
other countries with a large Hindi-speaking population have praised the UN’s
efforts to standardise and bring together news and multimedia material in
Hindi.
She said that the
Indian government will keep pushing for Hindi to be used at the United Nations. She said that this is
why we are happy to work with the United Nations. A news release from the
UN’s Permanent Mission of India says that the money was given to the UN
“to help spread the use of Hindi in the United Nations.”
Together with the UN’s
Division of Public Information, the Hindi@UN initiative was launched in 2018.
The purpose of this initiative is to raise awareness of global issues among the
millions of Hindi speakers around the world and to enhance the UN’s ability to
connect with the public in Hindi.
